About this piece

In ancient China, you broke a willow to say “stay.” What you wish to keep, you cannot always keep—but the feeling remains. This leaf holds one stick. Nothing more. Everything enough.

Introduction

A willow leaf, resting there. You place the incense stick into it, and the smoke rises.

Fifty minutes—the time it takes one stick to burn. The willow leaf doesn’t move; the smoke drifts away. But as you watch the smoke, the leaf is always there, holding it. Like some people—you don’t think of them often, but they’ve always been there, holding you. This incense holder isn’t for holding incense. It’s for reminding you: some things that hold you up have always been there.

A Message from the Artisan

When I was a child, I lived at my grandmother’s house. There was a willow tree in the yard. In summer, I used to lie under the tree and watch the leaves fall, one by one. My grandmother said: when a willow leaf falls, it’s saying goodbye to the tree.

Later, my grandmother passed away. The willow tree is gone too. But whenever I see something shaped like a willow leaf, I still think of her. This incense holder—I made it for myself. To let her know: I still remember. If you have someone you don’t want to forget, let this willow leaf hold that stick for you. When the smoke rises—that someone is here.

“Some things that hold you up have always been there.”

Small Gesture, Deep Meaning

Simply place one stick of incense into the willow leaf holder. The curved ceramic catches ash naturally. After use, rinse gently with water and pat dry.

The Story

The willow leaf—in ancient times, it was the branch broken off at parting. “Break a willow to say goodbye”—because the word for willow sounds like the word for “stay.” The ones you want to keep, you cannot keep. But the feeling you want to leave behind—that can stay.

This incense holder is a fallen willow leaf. Thin, curved, just enough to hold one incense stick. Those who light incense know: it’s not only people you cannot keep. It’s time. It’s moods. It’s thoughts that belong only to this moment. But in the moment the smoke rises—they’re all still here.
